"Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a lovely Christmas.
Just days before Christmas, the Government thought it was delivering an early gift to farmers in the form of a partial U-turn on its devastating Family Farm Tax.
After over a year of pressure from farmers across the country and MPs from across the House of the Commons, the Government finally caved and announced a partial climb down. Instead of the planned Family Farm Tax threshold being set at £1.5 million, it has been increased to £2.5 million.
Announced on December 23rd, the timing of this decision was deliberate and it was almost certainly announced at that time to prevent scrutiny during the busy Christmas and New Year period.
Official figures show that the UK has 6,270 fewer farms since this disastrous policy was announced and this shows the devastating impact that the Government is having on the farming sector.
Time will tell if this partial U-turn has any impact at all on reversing this decline, but in my opinion its still not enough. The whole tax needs to be axed because Inheritance Tax is wrong. This year I will continue to campaign to get this tax axed.
Ahead of the New Year, we witnessed the unsightly spectacle of our Prime Minister and our Government welcoming a man with extremist views into our country.
Alaa Abdel Fattah has made many abhorrent social media posts. In one he called for all Zionists to be killed. This is a man Keir Starmer was “delighted” had arrived in the UK following his release from prison in Egypt.
Alaa Abdel Fattah should never have been granted the privilege of UK citizenship. His passport should be torn up, his citizenship revoked. The Home Secretary has the power to do this and she should exercise her authority.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Prime Minister and a Government so out-of-touch with the country it is supposed to serve. Did we ever think we would have a Prime Minister who would be so gleeful about welcoming a man into our country who clearly hates the UK. Frankly its sickening and the British people deserve better."
